(male announcer) this is the bay area news station, kron 4 news starts now. >> tonight at 8-- new information about the case against a redwood city teacher. who's accused of abusing autistic children. the san mateo county district attorney has *dropped charges. because witnesses have changed their stories. but as kron 4's dan kerman tells us. that does *not mean the case is going away.

children are being victimized by not getting the justice they deserve. it does not mean that this ian abuse did not happen. >> there were abuses such as being kicked and food shop in their face. they are even lying dead or line now with food and -- shoved in their face. the to the teachers' aides are lying now or then. >> they believe that the journey is over and she is innocent. with misinformation and we understand that the continuation of the lawsuit but and they want to assure that the. in the community she has never abused children.

>> tonight. oakland police say the city is a little safer. after nearly 20 violent crime suspects are rounded up in a series of raids. 24 high- risk search and arrest warrants were served across the bay area today.all part of a crime fighting plan called "operation ceasefire". the charges ranging from attempted murder, to assaultiing a police officer. tonight, police say 18 people are now behind bars. a number of weapons were also taken off the street. police say the main target today is trying to avert a gang war between two violent groups. the so- called 'money team' and 'case' gangs. today oakland police showed us how this gang was terrorizing citizens. we want to take a close look at this surveillance video. it shows two gang members who were arrested today.robbing a woman at gun-point. check it out.

(woman piercing screaming) >> now we'll slow down the video and break it down. the victim is carrying several bags.one looks to be an expensive purse. we'll freeze it here. you can also see her keys.a cell phone in the other hand. it looks like she's trying to use the keys to open the door. but before she can get inside.the two robbers charge her. the lead suspect is holding a black hand-gun. the victim falls to the ground.and the suspect grabs her purse and another bag. the second suspect grabs something else. they take off.the victim gets up and runs.screaming. here it is again in real

time with audio. the victim's scream is piercing. police say this happened a few weeks ago near lake merrit. >> reporter: this morning's raids weren't limited to just oakland. kron 4's charles clifford shows us how this effort stretched across the bay area. the oakland police department says that these raids are actually part of an ongoing effort, and they aren't revealing exactly where the arrest were made friday morning, but here's what we do know. the main focus of the effort was in oakland, specifically east oakland. 20 warrants were served across the city. also, two search warrants were served 30 miles to the east in antioch there was also a raid in nearby brentwood. and finally a single warrant was served in pacifica, which is south of san francisco now, the multi agency task

force, led by opd, served 24 high risk warrants, 21 of the raids were conducted simultaneously between 5am and 7am friday morning and they say that the raids required no significant use of force and that there were no injuries. in the newsroom, charles clifford kron 4 news. >> new tonight at eight-- thieves are taking crime a step further in the bernal heights section of san francisco. in the last few weeks they've started breaking into cars so they can eventually get inside your garage. sounds complicated. but as kron 4's j.r. stone shows you it's actually quite simple. the person behind a winning lottery ticket-- sold in walnut creek-- is no longer as i have been walking through these streets there were plenty of plain view of these visors. and i had to start looking nicer cars. to find a garage door opener. that these have cleared out the garage, and even high- end bicycles. >> that is news to me. i

>> in san jose. police say they've solved two recent murder cases in the city. this person is behind bars, accused of a stabbing a man to death. this is video from our helicopter partnership with abc7 news. the victim, in his twenties, was found near guadalupe oak grove park on wednesday. an arrest also made in another murder. this woman is behind bars -- accused of stabbing her boyfriend to death in his apartment. this was the scene yesterday. the victim -- who suffered from dementia-- went missing in early february. police say at some point over the last few weeks, he showed up without anyone noticing. and was killed. this marked san jose's eighth homicide of the year. >> new tonight-- operators of the cat haven wildlife sanctuary say they will re-open on sunday. just four days after the death of volunteer dianna hansen. hansen was killed wednesday, when a 550-pound lion escaped from an enclosure. today. founder dale anderson said there is no evidence that hansen's death was due to her own

carelessness.he said she was not talking on her cell phone as previously indicated. the founder also saidhansen would agree that the concern now.should be for the surviving animals. >> it is important that we attend to their health and well-being, and we believe returning to normal operations is part of that process. >> pam: pele, a ten year old female lion, is feeling the stress of the traumatic week at the cat haven sanctuary. >> she was making -- like almost a barking noise and according to the handlers up here, this was a noise she does not normally make because of the stress. >> pam: her companion, couscous, was killed after the fatal attack on wednesday. the coroner says couscos was in this feeding cage, separated from the larger lion enclosure by a guillotine=type gate. hansen was in the larger space when couscous somehow managed to lift the gate. >> she absolutely adored cous cous a lion that has been with the facility that they had had for many

years. >> diana was not honor cellphone and she was following protocol >> animal experts say couscous just followed a lion's instincts. >> if you look at your domestic cat, you can see those natural innate abilities to be a hunter. when you take that to a level of a tiger or lion, that's timed by many, many thousands when it comes to predatory ability and strength." >> this is the power that these animals have. it is -- it's a tragic thing that happened here. i just can't describe what my fears are for the people of the sanctuary and all these parents,. every time, for now, when i see an african lion or tiger, i'm going to think of this young lady for the rest of my life as well. >> pam: hansen's father says his daughter loved her job. >> she was so happy. her last two months there as an internship at cat haven were the happiest of her life. her mother and i agree we had never seen her happier since the two months she got there. >> fire destroys part of a berkeley landmark. this is video of the early morning fire at the famed "chez panisse". the restaurant is now closed. but, chef alice waters tells kron 4's justine waldman. the restaurant will reopen. alice waters says information about reopening

address. then open up the garage. and steal everything inside police warn drivers *not to leave their garage openers in their car. investigators tell kron4 that undercover officers have now been assigned to the area. osama bin laden's son in- law facing a judge on american soil today. the government describes sulaiman abu ghaith as a spokesperson for the terrorist network after the 9-11 attacks. now he is entitled to the same judicial process as the american citizens he is accused of conspiring to kill. elizabeth corridan brings us up-to-date on today's developments. >> reporter: osama bin laden's son-in-law, sulaiman abu ghaith, made a brief appearance friday in a federal court room in new york city. he entered a not guilty plea through his attorney. abu ghaith is charged with one count of conspiring to kill americans. in court documents, prosecutors allege the al qaeda spokesperson tried to recruit more terrorists and

said about potential post 9-11 attacks on the u-s, quote, 'the storms will not stop, especially the airplane storms." abu ghaith - seen here with osama bin laden- was transferred to u.s. custody overseas on february 28th and arrived in the united states the following day. prosecutors say the suspect made a 22-page statement following his arrest, details of which are not being released. >> now that we have him under control, there needs to be a really deep, what i would call a dive into what he knows, when he knew it and how he got the information. >> reporter: some republicans say he's an enemy combatant who should not be afforded the same rights as american citizens. they want him tried by a military commission at guatanamo bay. >> we lose valuable

intelligence that can be used to prevent future attacks >> reporter: the obama administration contends the u-s court system is the best road to justice. >> the intelligence way to protect our national security interests is to prosecute abu ghaith in an article 3 court. >> reporter: abu ghaith's next hearing is set for april 8th. elizabeth corridan kron 4 news. >> in a rare move, former president bill clinton is pushing the supreme court to overturn an act that he signed into law. clinton says he's had a change of heart on the defense of marriage act. it's a law that defines marriage as a legal union between a man and a woman. and denies federal benefits to same-sex couples. the high court will hear arguments about whether the law is constitutional later this month. along with arguments about california's proposition 8. clinton says it was a very different time when the act reached his desk back in 19- 96. he says he now believes it goes against the principles of the united states constitution. >> our defenders discovered what appeared to be a large stash of illegal narcotics on our beach here at vandenberg air force base just north of wall? beach. also on the scene was an overturned aluminum boat, and its engine looks like it has been removed, like fallen off. >> all 2,000 of the base's

buildings were searched for possible intruders. and officials say, they still have not found the person who may have been driving the boat. they determined that there is no threat to the base, nor the local community. the department of homeland security has taken over the investigation in the east coast-- the power has been steadily returning for customers hit by snow. more than a foot of snow fell in some parts of connecticut. power officials say the weight of the snow and strong winds pulled down power lines and broke some trees. fewer than 17-hundred customers are still in the dark -- that's down from 13-thousand customers at the height of the storm.

>> now for today's market update. another day another record high for the dow. the stock market closed today marking the sixth straight day of gains -- a report from the u-s government indicating a hiring increase in february. helped the surge. and here are todays numbers. the dow jones jumped 67 points friday to close at 14-thousand-397. the nasdaq gained 12 points to 3-thousand- 244. and s-and-p rose nearly seven points to close at one-thousand- 551-- now just 14 points away from its own record.

alison kosik breaks down the new jobs report. and what it means for our economy. >> reporter: the labor market moved forward in february. employers added 236-thousand jobs. that means the economy has been adding jobs for three straight years now. the unemployment rate fell to 7-point-7 percent. the lowest since 2008. and one notable stand-out. the construction sector is making a comeback. adding 48-thousand jobs in february, and over 100- thousand jobs since november. that's a nice turnaround. considering that the industry lost millions of jobs during the financial crisis. construction is typically one of the last parts of the economy to recover after a recession. but now, with the housing market coming back, construction jobs finally are as well. although there's still a lot of ground to make up. but diane swonk, chief economist at mesirow financial, says while the overall trend in hiring is good, there's still plenty to be concerned about. >> the trend has been in the in firings. we've seen that in jobless claims, and we've seen some reports that suggest that consumers are feeling a little better about the situation today in the job market as well. that's the good news. that perception has yet to show up in the reality of the data, and until we really see people put their hat in the ring and looking for

jobs because they know they're going to get them, we won't feel a lot better >> reporter: that's the problem -- thousands of people are still dropping out of the work force. they've given up hope, stopped looking. that helps lower the unemployment rate, too. but for the wrong reason. so for now, a good jobs report. but still room for improvement. i'm alison kosik in new york. new tonight at 8-- >> state senator mark leno and other san francisco leaders, annouced a proposed law that would require both the san francisco and san mateo county boards of supervisors. to vote on whether gun shows could be allowed at the cow palace. and senator leno openly he admitted how both counties feel about gun shows. >> "i acknowledge both counties board of supervisors have repeatedly passed resolutions unaminously urging the state not th have the gun shows at this location but i can tell you what either borad would do five or ten or thirty years from now if there were to reach a consenious and say they wanted the gun
